Why Monochromacy Would be a Serious Handicap

Every row displays the same set of Munsell color chips. The upper two rows are illuminated by light from the blue sky with a color temperature of 16000 deg Kelvin. The lower two rows are illuminated by direct sunlight with 4500 deg Kelvin. The center rows demonstrate the brightness of the chips for a monochromat. Note the differences in ordering for the chips. A monochromat is not able to maintain background-object separation across light changes from shadow to sunlight.
